03 · Bangladesh and West Bengal
Two versions of the same calendar.
Bangladesh (this page)
A fixed, rule-based calendar tied to the Gregorian year: 1 Boishakh is always 14 April, month lengths are fixed, the day begins at midnight. It is used for government work, holidays and the Bangla Academy calendar.
West Bengal, Tripura, Assam (not covered)
The traditional calendar follows the Surya Siddhanta: month lengths come from the sun’s position, new year falls on 14 or 15 April, and festival dates follow the panjika. We could not source an openly licensed, verifiable implementation, so we do not guess. For West Bengal dates, use a published panjika.
04 · FAQ
Questions about the Bangla calendar
What is today’s Bangla date?
The box at the top reads your device clock, converts it to Dhaka time (UTC+6) and shows the date in the Bangla calendar of Bangladesh, in Bengali numerals, with the month, weekday and season. The month view underneath highlights today.
Why is the Bangla year 593 or 594 less than the English year?
The Bangla year starts on 14 April. From 14 April to 31 December the Bangla year is the Gregorian year minus 593 (2026 is 1433); from 1 January to 13 April it is minus 594 (early 2026 is still 1432).
How many days are in each Bangla month?
In the revised calendar Boishakh to Ashwin (the first six months) have 31 days; Kartik, Agrahayan, Poush, Magh and Chaitra have 30; Falgun has 29, or 30 in the year the Gregorian leap day falls. That makes 365 or 366 days and keeps 14 April as the new year.
Is this the same calendar as West Bengal’s?
No. India’s West Bengal uses the traditional Surya Siddhanta calendar, in which month lengths (29–32 days) follow the sun’s position and new year usually falls on 14 or 15 April. This page shows the calendar of Bangladesh only; dates can differ from a West Bengal panjika by a day or more. See the note on the page.
Why does the Bangladesh date change at midnight?
The traditional Bangla day began at sunrise. The revised calendar, used in Bangladesh, switched to a midnight start like the Gregorian calendar from 1402 (1995), so a single date applies for the whole civil day.
What changed in 2019?
The Bangla Academy’s revision adopted by the government in 2019 made Boishakh to Ashwin 31 days each (earlier it was Boishakh to Bhadro) and put the leap day in Falgun. Dates before 14 April 2019 followed the older 1987 version, so the tool marks results before then.
