02 · What a browser cannot type
Kruti Dev glyphs that need Alt codes.
Kruti Dev is a font, and a few of its characters are reached only with Windows Alt codes. A web page cannot read those reliably, so the passages here are chosen to avoid them. In a real exam you may meet them.
- ँ (chandrabindu)
- The Kruti Dev font draws it as ¡, which is Alt+0161.
- ऊ and ऑ
- Å and ‚ are Alt codes (Alt+0197, Alt+0130).
- ों after a reph (र्षों)
- Drawn as one glyph, ±, an Alt code.
- ट्ट, ट्ठ, ह्
- These have one-glyph forms. The test uses the key sequences that give the same Unicode (V~V, V~B, g~).
03 · How this test treats Kruti Dev
Keys in, Unicode out, compared as Unicode.
The input is the profile krutidev from the converter engine. After every key the whole key string is converted again, so ि typed before a letter and reph typed after it land where they belong, and Backspace removes the last key you pressed. The result is compared with the passage in Unicode, normalised so that equivalent forms (a nukta letter written as one code or two) are equal.
Exam software that scores in the Kruti Dev font compares font codes rather than Unicode. Differences of that kind, such as two ways of writing the same conjunct, do not show up here.

Questions about this page
Is this the same as the Remington Hindi keyboard?
Kruti Dev follows the Hindi typewriter (Remington-style) arrangement, so typists trained on typewriters use it. “Remington GAIL” in exam software is a related but different layout; if your exam names it, use the Remington GAIL test instead.
Do I need the Kruti Dev font?
No. Keys are turned into Unicode as you type and compared with a Unicode passage. The passage is shown in a Unicode font. You only need Kruti Dev installed if you want to paste the raw keystrokes into a Kruti Dev document.
Why are some words I know missing from the passages?
A few Kruti Dev characters need an Alt code, which a browser cannot read reliably, so the passages avoid ँ, ऊ, ऑ and a few conjuncts. Real Kruti Dev exams include them; type them with Alt codes in your exam software.
Is the scoring the same as for Remington or InScript?
Yes. All Hindi layouts are scored the same way, in Unicode, so you can compare your speed across layouts.
