Tamil phonetic typing: type “vanakkam”, get வணக்கம்

Write Tamil in English letters, the way you would in a message, and see Unicode Tamil appear beside it. The rules are fixed and listed below, so the same letters always give the same Tamil.

Try:

Unicode Tamil (copy anywhere)

Capital N L R S give ண ள ற ஸ; aa ii uu (or A I U) are the long vowels; put text in {braces} to keep it in English.

01 · How it works

Six rules cover almost everything.

  1. 01

    Type the sound

Consonants and vowels are written the way they sound: ka, ki, kuu. A consonant with no vowel after it gets a pulli, so “thamizh” ends in ழ்.

    thamizhதமிழ்

  2. 02

    Long vowels: double or capital

    aa ii uu ee oo, or the capitals A I U E O, give ஆ ஈ ஊ ஏ ஓ. Single e and o are the short எ and ஒ. ai and au are ஐ and ஔ.

    kaalaiகாலை

  3. 03

    Capitals pick ண ள ற ஸ

Capital N is ண, L is ள, R is ற and S is ஸ. Use them when the sound matters: “maNi” is மணி, “makkaL” is மக்கள்.

    makkaLமக்கள்

  4. 04

    ந, ன, ங and ஞ are chosen by position

Roman letters cannot tell them apart, so n becomes ந at the start of a word, ந் before th, ண் before t or d, ங் before k and ன elsewhere. “ng” and “nj” inside a word give ங்க and ஞ்ச.

    thangamதங்கம்

  5. 05

A short word list covers the rest

For very common words the spelling cannot be worked out from letters alone, such as vanakkam, amma or madurai, the converter uses a short built-in list. Type a capital letter to skip it.

    vanakkamவணக்கம்

  6. 06

    Keep English with { }

Put any text in curly braces to leave it as it is: names, URLs or English words in the middle of a Tamil sentence.

    nandri {Google} vanakkamநன்றி Google வணக்கம்

03 · FAQ

Questions about phonetic typing

Why does the converter sometimes pick the wrong letter?

English letters do not carry the differences Tamil spelling needs: ல ள ழ, ந ன ண, ர ற, and short versus long vowels all collapse. The converter uses the rules above and a short word list, but it cannot read your mind. Use capitals (N L R S) and double vowels to be exact, and check the result.

How do I type ழ, ள and ற?

ழ is zh (thamizh), ள is a capital L, and ற is a capital R (kaaRu is காறு). Plain l and r are ல and ர.

How do I type the aytham ஃ?

Type q: aqku is அஃகு.

Can I type a Tamil word that the converter spells differently?

Yes: use the capital letters, or add a hyphen after n (n-) to force ந. If it is still wrong, copy the result and fix that one letter, or switch to the Tamil99 keyboard, which gives you full control.

Is this the same as Google’s Tamil typing or an app like NHM Writer?

Not exactly. Those tools guess from a dictionary and show suggestions. This one is predictable: the same letters always give the same Tamil, using the rules on this page.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser. The last text you typed is kept only in this tab’s session storage so a refresh does not lose it.
