01 · How the layout works
How the Preeti layout works.
Preeti is Nepal’s best-known legacy font, typed with a typewriter-style Nepali arrangement. Letters are one key each (k is प, s is क, g is न), conjuncts and half letters sit on Shift keys, the vowel sign ि is typed before its letter (l), and the reph is typed after the letter it sits on ({, which is Shift+[). Devanagari digits are on the Shift layer of the number row (Shift+1 is १); the unshifted number row holds letters and conjuncts such as 1 ज्ञ, 3 घ and 5 छ.

Some vowel signs are typed first and the letter after, the way they look on paper. The converter puts them after the letter in Unicode.

Shift gives half letters
Many shifted keys give the half form used in conjuncts. ~ on its own is ञ्, so ~s makes a conjunct.

The font also uses characters outside the plain keys: conjunct glyphs and extra signs, typed with Alt codes or a keyboard driver in the real font. Open “more characters” under the keys to add them.

Questions about the Preeti keyboard
Is Preeti typing the same as Nepali Unicode Traditional?
Close but not identical. Preeti types the ि sign before its letter, Unicode Traditional types it after, and a few punctuation and conjunct keys differ. The Nepali Unicode page has the Traditional layout, and also the Romanized one, which types by sound.
How do I convert my Preeti file?
Paste the Preeti text into the Preeti to Unicode converter, or upload a Word file to the Word file converter. This page is for typing Preeti keystrokes.
Do I need the Preeti font installed?
No. This page turns your keystrokes into Unicode Nepali as you type, which displays everywhere without any special font. You only need Preeti installed if you copy the raw keystrokes (“Copy keys”) into a document set in Preeti.
Can I use this on a phone?
Yes. Tap the on-screen keys. Each key shows the Nepali letter it types, and dashed keys depend on position.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. The last text you typed is kept only in this tab’s session storage so a refresh doesn’t lose it.
