Preeti is a legacy Nepali font from the DTP era. Like Kruti Dev for Hindi, it draws Devanagari on top of English keys: typed on a normal keyboard, it stores “g]kfn” in the file and shows “नेपाल” on screen only when the font is installed.
It became the usual choice for a great deal of Nepali word processing and newspaper layout, and related Nepali fonts (including Kantipur, Sagarmatha and Himalb) use similar but not identical key assignments. Nepali typing-practice tools are commonly built around the Preeti keyboard.
Nepal’s digital services increasingly use Unicode, which is why so many people now need to bring Preeti documents into Unicode for websites, mobile phones and online forms.
