01 · What we could verify
Not the official numbers. Here is why.
On 1 November 2026 the official CPCT site (cpct.mp.gov.in) refused our request, so nothing on this page is quoted from a CPCT notice. Duration, passage size, accepted layouts and the qualifying standard are all set by the notification. Check the current notification before you rely on any figure you read elsewhere, including coaching pages that call 15 minutes and a particular words-per-minute target “the rule”.

Six things to read before you practise.
- 01Which Hindi layouts are allowed (Remington GAIL, InScript, others) and whether the keyboard is chosen before or during the test.
- 02How long each typing test runs and how long the mock is.
- 03How long the passage is and how mistakes are counted.
- 04The minimum net speed or accuracy needed to qualify, for English and for Hindi.
- 05Whether Backspace and arrow keys may be used.
- 06Which font and encoding the answer is saved in.
Once you know the answers, set this test to match: choose the layout and time on the Hindi typing test or the English typing test, and decide in advance whether you will use Backspace.
03 · Layouts in government tests
Remington GAIL and InScript show up again and again.
A 2018 Allahabad High Court notice for a clerical cadre lists three typing options: “Inscript”, “Remington (GAIL)” and “Devnagari”. The SSC CHSL 2023 Tier II instructions list InScript, Kruti Dev, Remington GAIL and Remington CBI layouts. That shows how common these layouts are; it does not tell you which one CPCT accepts this year.
The practice presets here offer Remington GAIL and Mangal InScript for Hindi, with scoring in Unicode. The Hindi typing test also offers Kruti Dev.
04 · Scoring
How mistakes are counted in this practice.
Speed
- Word
- Five key depressions. This ratio is how exam speeds are quoted: 35 w.p.m. is 10,500 key depressions an hour and 30 w.p.m. is 9,000.
- Gross WPM
- Key depressions ÷ 5 ÷ minutes typed. Backspace presses are not counted as typing. Generic definition.
- Net WPM
- Gross WPM minus weighted mistakes per minute (a full mistake counts 1, a half mistake ½). A common generic definition; none of the exam notices we read publishes a net-speed formula, so treat it as an estimate.
Accuracy
- Error percentage
- (full mistakes + half mistakes ÷ 2) × 100 ÷ words of the passage you reached. This is the formula SSC publishes for stenography evaluation; the typing notices we read give the mistake classes but no formula, so we apply the same one.
- Word accuracy
- 100 minus the error percentage. This is the headline accuracy.
- Character accuracy
- Letters you typed correctly out of letters typed, as an edit distance on grapheme clusters, so a conjunct or a letter with its matra counts as one unit.
Full mistakes (1 each)
- Omitting a word or figure
- Replacing a word with a wrong one
- Adding a word that is not in the passage
- A spelling error (a letter repeated, added, left out or swapped)
- Repeating a word
- An incomplete word
Half mistakes (½ each)
- Spacing errors: two words run together, or a space inside a word
- Wrong capitalisation
- Punctuation omitted, added or changed
- Two words swapped (transposition)
The mistake classes follow SSC Eastern Region’s Revised Guidelines for Evaluation of Typing Test/DEST Scripts. The SSC CHSL 2023 candidate instructions and some coaching summaries list a repeated letter in a spelling as a half mistake; the evaluation guidelines call it a full mistake, and we follow the guidelines. Other recruiters count differently. We do not score paragraph-indent mistakes, because the test box has no Tab-indent rule.

Questions about this page
What is CPCT?
The Computer Proficiency Certification Test, a computer skills test for recruitment in Madhya Pradesh that includes English and Hindi typing. It is run through an official Madhya Pradesh portal, which is where its rules are published.
Why does this page not list official rules?
We tried to read the official CPCT site on 1 November 2026 and the request was refused (HTTP 400), so we could not quote it. Rather than repeat numbers from coaching websites as facts, this page tells you what to check and gives you a practice setting. Read the current notification on the official portal.
Which Hindi layout does CPCT use?
Coaching sites commonly name Remington GAIL and InScript; we could not confirm that against the official notice. The layout choice here is for practice. A 2018 Allahabad High Court notice shows Remington (GAIL) offered in another recruitment, which tells you the layout exists in government tests, not that CPCT uses it.
What does the 15-minute preset do?
It sets 15 minutes and Exam style (no live colours, Backspace allowed). The 15-minute length is the figure usually quoted for each CPCT typing test, but that is a secondary claim; the preset is a practice length, not a guarantee.
How are my mistakes counted here?
With the full and half mistake classes from SSC’s evaluation guidelines, which are the clearest public description of word-by-word typing marking. CPCT may count differently.
