Fix broken Hindi and Indian-language text

Text that looks like भारत or भ is usually Unicode that was read with the wrong encoding. Paste it and get भारत back.

01 · What it repairs

Five ways Indian text breaks.

UTF-8 shown as Windows-1252

भारत

repaired

भारत

Cause: A file saved as UTF-8 was opened as “ANSI / Windows-1252” (a missing charset header, a database set to latin1, or a CSV opened in Excel).

Double encoding

भारत

repaired

भारत

Cause: The mistake above happened twice: converted to Windows-1252 and then treated as UTF-8 again. Usually a database export that was re-saved.

HTML character references

भारत

repaired

भारत

Cause: Text written for HTML but shown as plain text, or double-escaped by a CMS. Each number is the Unicode code point in decimal; भ is the same in hex.

JavaScript / JSON escapes

\u092d\u093e\u0930\u0924

repaired

भारत

Cause: A JSON file or API response printed without being parsed.

Percent-encoded UTF-8

%E0%A4%AD%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%B0%E0%A4%A4

repaired

भारत

Cause: A URL or form value that wasn’t decoded.

02 · Prevent it

How to stop it happening again.

  • Web pages

    Add <meta charset="utf-8"> as the first thing in <head> and send Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8.

  • CSV in Excel

Excel opens plain CSV as ANSI. Save as “CSV UTF-8”, or import with Data → From Text/CSV and choose 65001: UTF-8.

  • Databases

Use utf8mb4 for MySQL columns and connections, UTF8 for PostgreSQL. A latin1 link is the classic cause of double encoding.

If your text is English-looking gibberish like Hkkjr, it is not an encoding error; try the Font detector.

03 · FAQ

Questions about broken text fixer

Why does Hindi text show up as “भारत”?

The text is fine; it is being read with the wrong character encoding. Hindi letters take three bytes in UTF-8 (भ is E0 A4 AD). A program that thinks those bytes are Windows-1252 shows each as a Western letter: “à”, “¤” and an invisible soft hyphen. This tool reverses it by mapping each character back to its byte and decoding the bytes as UTF-8.

Can all broken text be fixed?

No. If the text has become question marks (????) or the replacement symbol (), the original letters were replaced when the file was saved, and they cannot be recovered from the text. The same for text mangled by a bad copy-paste that dropped bytes: we repair what we can and tell you which characters were inferred.

What about invisible characters that were lost?

Windows-1252 has holes. Bytes like 0x81, 0x8D, 0x90 and the soft hyphen 0xAD are often stripped, and these are exactly the third bytes of some Devanagari letters and of the virama (्). When one is missing we guess the most likely letter (the virama after the second half of a script block, भ after the first) and flag the result so you can check it.

My text looks like English gibberish (Hkkjr, fgUnh), not भ. Is that the same problem?

No. That is a legacy font such as Kruti Dev or Chanakya: ordinary English letters displayed as Hindi by a special font. It needs a font converter. If the tool spots that, it will point you to the Font detector.

Will it break text that is already fine?

It leaves clean Unicode text untouched. It only changes text that contains the telltale byte patterns (an “à” or “Ô followed by a punctuation-like character), HTML references, escapes or percent-codes.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Repairs run in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
