01 · Check the current notification

Rules change by year and by post.

Everything below was read in the SSC CHSL 2023 Tier II typing documents, last checked 1 November 2026. SSC may change durations, passage sizes, layouts or standards in any later notice. Check the current notification for your exam before relying on a number on this page.

Key depressions are not words. At five key depressions per word, 1,750 is about 350 words and 1,500 about 300 words. The passages on this site are of different lengths, and longer times chain several of them.

03 · Mistakes and scoring

How a test here is marked.

Speed

Word
Five key depressions. This ratio is how exam speeds are quoted: 35 w.p.m. is 10,500 key depressions an hour and 30 w.p.m. is 9,000.
Gross WPM
Key depressions ÷ 5 ÷ minutes typed. Backspace presses are not counted as typing. Generic definition.
Net WPM
Gross WPM minus weighted mistakes per minute (a full mistake counts 1, a half mistake ½). A common generic definition; none of the exam notices we read publishes a net-speed formula, so treat it as an estimate.

Accuracy

Error percentage
(full mistakes + half mistakes ÷ 2) × 100 ÷ words of the passage you reached. This is the formula SSC publishes for stenography evaluation; the typing notices we read give the mistake classes but no formula, so we apply the same one.
Word accuracy
100 minus the error percentage. This is the headline accuracy.
Character accuracy
Letters you typed correctly out of letters typed, as an edit distance on grapheme clusters, so a conjunct or a letter with its matra counts as one unit.

Full mistakes (1 each)

  • Omitting a word or figure
  • Replacing a word with a wrong one
  • Adding a word that is not in the passage
  • A spelling error (a letter repeated, added, left out or swapped)
  • Repeating a word
  • An incomplete word

Half mistakes (½ each)

  • Spacing errors: two words run together, or a space inside a word
  • Wrong capitalisation
  • Punctuation omitted, added or changed
  • Two words swapped (transposition)

The mistake classes follow SSC Eastern Region’s Revised Guidelines for Evaluation of Typing Test/DEST Scripts. The SSC CHSL 2023 candidate instructions and some coaching summaries list a repeated letter in a spelling as a half mistake; the evaluation guidelines call it a full mistake, and we follow the guidelines. Other recruiters count differently. We do not score paragraph-indent mistakes, because the test box has no Tab-indent rule.

04 · What the preset does

Close to the exam, not a copy of it.

Copies the notice

  • 10-minute typing time
  • English (US) for English; Inscript, Krutidev and Remington GAIL for Hindi
  • Backspace allowed by default
  • Full and half mistake classes

Does not copy

  • The official passages or their exact length
  • The exam software’s own IME and its key positions
  • Remington CBI and arrow-key editing inside typed text
  • The official pass standard, which we could not confirm

05 · FAQ

Questions about this page

Is this an official SSC practice test?

No. It is independent practice built from public SSC documents. The passages are original, the layouts are our own implementations, and the score is an estimate. Always read the current SSC notice and use the practice offered by SSC itself.

What does the SSC preset change?

It sets 10 minutes, Exam style (no live colours), Backspace on, and shows the speed target next to your result. It does not copy official passages or the official scoring screen.

What is the pass mark for the typing test?

We could not find a mistake limit in the candidate instructions we read. A coaching site says candidates should type with 80% accuracy to qualify; we have not seen that in an SSC document, so treat it as unconfirmed and check the notification.

Which Hindi layouts does SSC allow?

The CHSL 2023 Tier II instructions list “Hindi Inscript”, “Hindi Krutidev”, “Hindi Remington GAIL” and “Hindi Remington CBI”, and say the layout can be changed during the test. Remington CBI is not available on this site.

Why do two SSC documents disagree about repeated letters?

The Eastern Region evaluation guidelines call a spelling error by repetition, addition, omission or substitution of a letter a full mistake. Some coaching summaries of the CHSL 2023 instructions list a repeated letter as a half mistake. We follow the evaluation guidelines. If the notice for your exam says otherwise, that wins.
