04 · FAQ

Questions about number words

What is the Indian numbering system?

Digits are grouped as 3, then 2, then 2: 12,50,00,000. The place names are thousand, lakh (1,00,000), crore (1,00,00,000), arab (1,00,00,00,000) and kharab (1,00,00,00,00,000). This tool writes them in every language it supports, and in English as “lakh” and “crore”.

How do I write an amount in words on a cheque?

Write the rupees in words, the currency word, and “and” plus the paise in words if there are any, then “Only” so nothing can be added. Choose “Amount”, enter the figure and tick the “only” box. In English the result looks like “Rupees One Lakh Twenty-Five Thousand and Fifty Paise Only”.

Which currencies can I use?

Indian rupees (₹) in all languages, Nepalese rupees (रु) in Nepali and English, Bangladeshi taka (৳) in Bengali and English, and Pakistani rupees in Urdu and English. Amounts are rounded to two decimal places.

Does it work for decimals and negative numbers?

Yes. Outside “Amount” mode decimals are read digit by digit (3.14 is “three point one four”), and a minus sign gives “minus” in the language. Whole numbers up to 15 digits are supported.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. The page downloads the spelling rules for the language you pick, once, and everything is computed in your browser.

Why do some numbers show two possible spellings in the notes?

Many Indian languages have accepted variants (Hindi निन्यानबे / निन्यानवे, Bengali পনেরো / পনের, Telugu ఐదు / అయిదు). The tool consistently uses the Unicode CLDR form and each language page lists the common alternatives.

05 · Checking

How far the words are checked.

Because CLDR is one source, we compared every language’s 0–99 with other sources: Wiktionary headwords, Wikipedia and Wikibooks number pages, and the open-source num2words library. The table shows how many of the 100 words (0 to 99) at least one independent source confirmed. The rest are CLDR-only and have not been reviewed by a native speaker. Check formal documents.

Some numbers differ from other sources only by accepted spelling (Hindi 91–99 -बे/-वे, Telugu ఐదు/అయిదు) and are counted as unconfirmed here. Tamil is written with spaces (இருபத்து ஒன்று); published lists write the joined form, which cannot be compared word for word. Local corrections to CLDR: Bengali 20 uses বিশ (CLDR: কুড়ি), Hindi feminine ordinals take the nasal (पाँचवीं), and Malayalam compound parts are separated by a space.
