Type a font name in English or in its own script. Search runs in your browser on a prebuilt index; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

01 · How a test works

Pick, type, read your mistakes.

  1. 01

    Set up

Choose layout, time (1, 2, 5, 10 or 15 minutes), mode and whether Backspace is allowed. For longer times, several passages are chained so you do not run out.

  2. 02

    Type

The clock starts with your first key and stops at the time limit or at the end of the passage. Press Esc to restart. Paste is switched off.

  3. 03

    Review

See net and gross speed, accuracy, key depressions and every mistaken word with the word you should have typed. Download an image or share the result.

02 · Comparison happens in Unicode

Layouts differ. The check is the same.

Whatever layout you type on, your keystrokes become Unicode text and are compared with a Unicode passage. Kruti Dev keystrokes go through the same engine as the Kruti Dev converter; Remington GAIL and InScript have their own input code. That means one fair yardstick across layouts, and no font to install.

Letters are compared as grapheme clusters, the units a reader sees, so a consonant with its matra, or a full conjunct, counts as one character and a conjunct you are halfway through typing is not marked wrong.

03 · Scoring

Every number, and where it comes from.

Speed

Word
Five key depressions. This ratio is how exam speeds are quoted: 35 w.p.m. is 10,500 key depressions an hour and 30 w.p.m. is 9,000.
Gross WPM
Key depressions ÷ 5 ÷ minutes typed. Backspace presses are not counted as typing. Generic definition.
Net WPM
Gross WPM minus weighted mistakes per minute (a full mistake counts 1, a half mistake ½). A common generic definition; none of the exam notices we read publishes a net-speed formula, so treat it as an estimate.

Accuracy

Error percentage
(full mistakes + half mistakes ÷ 2) × 100 ÷ words of the passage you reached. This is the formula SSC publishes for stenography evaluation; the typing notices we read give the mistake classes but no formula, so we apply the same one.
Word accuracy
100 minus the error percentage. This is the headline accuracy.
Character accuracy
Letters you typed correctly out of letters typed, as an edit distance on grapheme clusters, so a conjunct or a letter with its matra counts as one unit and a half-typed conjunct is not flagged while you are still building it.

Full mistakes (1 each)

  • Omitting a word or figure
  • Replacing a word with a wrong one
  • Adding a word that is not in the passage
  • A spelling error (a letter repeated, added, left out or swapped)
  • Repeating a word
  • An incomplete word

Half mistakes (½ each)

  • Spacing errors: two words run together, or a space inside a word
  • Punctuation omitted, added or changed
  • Two words swapped (transposition)

The mistake classes follow SSC Eastern Region’s Revised Guidelines for Evaluation of Typing Test/DEST Scripts. The SSC CHSL 2023 candidate instructions and some coaching summaries list a repeated letter in a spelling as a half mistake; the evaluation guidelines call it a full mistake, and we follow the guidelines. Other recruiters count differently. We do not score paragraph-indent mistakes, because the test box has no Tab-indent rule.

04 · FAQ

Questions about this page

Is the typing test free and private?

Yes. The test runs in your browser and nothing you type is uploaded. Your personal best is stored in this browser’s localStorage and nowhere else. If you press Share, your device’s share sheet or your clipboard handles the text, and only if you choose to.

What is the difference between Practice and Exam style?

Practice colours the passage as you type (green for correct, red for wrong) and shows live speed. Exam style shows the plain passage with no hints. You can turn highlighting back on, and you can switch Backspace off to match an exam that does not allow correction.

Which layout should I choose for Hindi?

The one your exam names. SSC CHSL 2023 Tier II allowed InScript, Kruti Dev, Remington GAIL and Remington CBI layouts. Other recruiters allow other sets, so read the current notification. Remington CBI is not available here.

Are these official exam passages?

No. Every passage was written for this site, in plain language, and none is copied from an exam or a book. Official passages differ in length and style.

Is my score the same as the exam’s?

It is an estimate. We count mistakes the way SSC’s published evaluation guidelines describe, but exams differ in rules and in how the final score is formed. Where the official method is unknown we use the generic formula and say so.

Can I use a phone?

The layout tests need a physical keyboard with the English (US) layout. English typing tests work with a phone keyboard, but exam-style typing is meant for a computer.
