Bijoy keyboard: type Bangla, get Unicode

Type with the Bijoy keys you know and get Unicode Bangla that works on Facebook, Google Docs, WhatsApp and every website, with no Bijoy or SutonnyMJ font needed.

Unicode Bangla (copy anywhere)

Dashed keys depend on position. Faded keys are not mapped by this font. Hold Shift on your keyboard to see the upper layer.

01 · How the layout works

How the Bijoy layout works.

Bijoy is the keyboard and font family that put Bangla on computers in Bangladesh. Letters are one key each (v is ◌া, m is স, i is র), the vowel signs ◌ি, ◌ে and ◌ৈ are typed before the consonant as they appear on paper, and many conjunct glyphs have their own keys. Several of those conjunct and vowel-sign characters live outside the plain keyboard, so a tray of them is included below the keys.

Type the keys, get the word

Most letters are one key. For example, Bijoy spells বাংলা with the keys shown here.

    evsjvবাংলা

  2. 02

◌ি is typed before the letter

Some vowel signs are typed first and the letter after, the way they look on paper. The converter puts them after the letter in Unicode.

    wKকি

  3. 03

69 characters are off the keyboard

The font also uses characters outside the plain keys: conjunct glyphs and extra signs, typed with Alt codes or a keyboard driver in the real font. Open “more characters” under the keys to add them.

03 · Practice

Common words, and their keystrokes.

Type the keys in the box above and check you get the word. Each pair was generated and checked by the converter when this page was built. “Try” puts the keystrokes in the box.

Some keystrokes include characters that are not on the keyboard (they look like symbols or accented letters). In the real font these come from Alt codes or a keyboard driver; “Try” inserts them for you, and the “more characters” tray lists them all.

04 · FAQ

Questions about the Bijoy keyboard

Is this the Bijoy keyboard layout?

It uses the Bijoy ASCII layout, the same arrangement as the legacy Bijoy / SutonnyMJ fonts. The on-screen keys show what each key types. A few characters that Bijoy gets from Alt codes are in the “more characters” tray.

I type Bijoy in Unicode already. Do I need this?

Only if you want to see or check what Bijoy keystrokes mean. If you already have software that types Unicode with the Bijoy layout, keep using it; its output needs no conversion.

Is this the same as the Bangla InScript or Avro keyboard?

No. Avro is phonetic and InScript is the Indian standard layout. Both are different arrangements from Bijoy. See the Bangla InScript keyboard for InScript.

Do I need the Bijoy font installed?

No. This page turns your keystrokes into Unicode Bangla as you type, which displays everywhere without any special font. You only need Bijoy installed if you copy the raw keystrokes (“Copy keys”) into a document set in Bijoy.

Can I use this on a phone?

Yes. Tap the on-screen keys. Each key shows the Bangla letter it types, and dashed keys depend on position.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. The last text you typed is kept only in this tab’s session storage so a refresh doesn’t lose it.
