01 · Why InScript
One standard layout for Hindi, and every other Indian script.
InScript is the standard layout Windows includes for Hindi (look for “Hindi Traditional”, or “Devanagari - INSCRIPT” in older versions, in its keyboard list), so what you practise here is what Windows types. Consonants are single keys, vowel signs sit on the left hand, and the halant key (d) joins consonants into conjuncts.
Some government typing tests accept InScript with a Unicode font such as Mangal; the SSC CHSL 2023 Tier II instructions, for example, listed an InScript option for Hindi. Which layouts and fonts are allowed changes between exams and years, so check your exam’s official notice before you rely on any layout.

Questions about Hindi InScript
Is InScript the same as Kruti Dev or Remington?
No. Kruti Dev and Remington follow the Hindi typewriter arrangement; InScript follows the logical arrangement shared by all Indian scripts. They are different layouts, so practise in the one your exam or office uses. For the typewriter style, see the Kruti Dev keyboard.
Do I need to install a Hindi keyboard or font?
No. This page works in any browser and outputs Unicode, which shows in Mangal, Noto Sans Devanagari and every other Unicode font. On your own computer you can also add the “Hindi Traditional” keyboard in Windows settings to type InScript in every app.
How do I type the rupee sign or ZWJ?
AltGr+4 types ₹. AltGr+1 and AltGr+2 type ZWJ and ZWNJ, which control how a conjunct is shaped.
What is InScript?
InScript (“Indian Script”) is the standard keyboard layout for Indian scripts, defined by C-DAC and standardised by the Bureau of Indian Standards. Every script uses the same logical arrangement: vowels and vowel signs on the left, consonants on the right, and the halant key for conjuncts.
How do I add InScript to my own computer?
On Windows, open Settings, then Time & language, then Language & region. Add the language and choose its InScript (or standard) keyboard from the keyboard list, then switch with Win+Space. Linux desktops include InScript variants in the keyboard settings too. This page needs nothing installed.
Can I use this on a phone?
Yes. Tap the on-screen keys; they work in the same layout. On touch devices the phone’s own keyboard is hidden so it does not interfere, and there is a link to bring it back.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Typing, copying and the Word download all happen in your browser. The text you typed is kept only in this tab’s session storage so a refresh does not lose it.
