01 · How Punjabi typing works
Gurmukhi is written differently from Devanagari: consonants do not stack, doubled sounds take the addak ੱ, and nasals take tippi ੰ or bindi ਂ depending on the vowel. This page applies those rules, so “pakka” becomes ਪੱਕਾ rather than a Devanagari-style conjunct.
Type the doubled consonant and the addak is written for you. A letter and its aspirate pair up the same way (k+kh).
M writes ੰ after a short vowel and ਂ after a long one, so you never choose between them.
sh is ਸ਼, z is ਜ਼, f is ਫ਼, L is ਲ਼, and R is ੜ.
The one consonant that sits under another is ਰ, as in ਸ੍ਰੀ and ਪ੍ਰ. Every other cluster is written side by side.
Press space, Enter or a punctuation mark and the word you typed turns into Punjabi. Pasted text is converted word by word.
Roman letters can be read several ways. The chips list known words first, then single-letter alternatives. Press 1–5 or tap.
Toggle plain English for names, URLs and numbers. Backspace right after a conversion gives your letters back.
02 · Spelling ambiguity
Gurmukhi typing is ambiguous in the doubled consonants (addak), the nasal sign (tippi or bindi) and the special letters ੜ ਸ਼ ਜ਼ ਫ਼. Every pair below was run through the typing engine when the page was built, and a test checks each one.
Type the letter twice to get the addak ੱ.
Capital D inside a word is the retroflex ਡ and capital R is ੜ.
Capital M adds ੰ or ਂ depending on the vowel.
Typed kudii and got ਕੁਦੀ
Meant ਕੁੜੀ

03 · Mapping chart
Generated by running the same typing engine the tool above uses, so it cannot drift from what you get. Capital letters are different letters, not emphasis.
Capital letters are different letters, not emphasis.
Gurmukhi does not stack consonants. Only ਰ goes under a letter (ਪ੍ਰ); doubled consonants take addak ੱ.

Yes. It works in any Unicode text field. For old AnmolLipi or DrChatrik text use the converters linked below.
A final i is read as ੀ here, and the middle aa makes the ਾ sign. If you type panjabi, the chips offer the longer spelling and the word list picks it when it can.
No. Shahmukhi (the Arabic-script form of Punjabi) is a different writing system. Use the Urdu typing page for Perso-Arabic letters.
Click in the box and type each word the way it sounds, for example “paMjaabii bhaashaa”. When you press space or a punctuation key the word becomes Punjabi (ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ). The chips above the box list other spellings; press 1–5 or tap one to swap it in.
Right after a word converts, press Backspace once to get your English letters back and edit them, or press Ctrl+Z, or tap “Undo word”. You can also tap another chip before pressing space. Switch with Ctrl+Space when you want plain English.
No. The conversion runs in your browser. The page downloads one small word-list file from this site so it can suggest spellings; what you type is never sent. The text is kept in this tab’s session storage so a refresh does not lose it, and it disappears when you close the tab.
It is built for touch screens: big tappable chips, and the conversion waits until your keyboard has finished its own word so predictive keyboards do not fight it. If your phone keyboard autocorrects Roman words before this page sees them, turn off auto-correct for this site or use the suggestion chips.
Yes: Copy puts the Punjabi text on the clipboard, and the download buttons save a .txt or a Word .docx. The text is standard Unicode, so it pastes into WhatsApp, Gmail, Word and Google Docs.
