Bengali · Typing tool
Type “ami tomake bhalobashi” in English letters and get বাংলা as you press space, with the suggestions you know from Avro-style typing.
Spellings appear here as you type. Press 1–5 to choose one.
Example: amar sOnar bangla → আমার সোনার বাংলা · runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.
01 · How Bengali typing works
Bengali phonetic typing treats a as আ/া and keeps the inherent vowel silent, as in Avro: kolom is কলম and O (capital) is the ও/ো vowel. A word-final o is the ো sign (bhalo), and ng is the ং of বাংলা.
Type a for the আ sound. A medial o is the inherent অ and writes nothing; word-initial o is অ, and a word-final o is ো. Capital O is always ও/ো.
bangla gives বাংলা. A capital Ng or ~N is the separate letter ঙ.
Capital R and Rh give ড় and ঢ়. y is য় (as at the end of কোথায়), while after a consonant it is the য-ফলা of সন্ধ্যা. t` gives ৎ.
Dhaka would be read as dhaka. Start with ^ to keep a capital at the start of a word.
ksh or kkh gives ক্ষ, and gy or jn gives জ্ঞ.
Press space, Enter or a punctuation mark and the word you typed turns into Bengali. Pasted text is converted word by word.
Roman letters can be read several ways. The chips list known words first, then single-letter alternatives. Press 1–5 or tap.
Toggle plain English for names, URLs and numbers. Backspace right after a conversion gives your letters back.
02 · Spelling ambiguity
Bengali phonetic typing has more silent-vowel and sibilant ambiguity than the other scripts: the inherent o, the three s-sounds and the dotted r letters. Every pair below was run through the typing engine when the page was built, and a test checks each one.
sh is শ, capital S is ষ, plain s is স.
A medial o writes nothing. Capital O is the ও vowel or ো sign.
Capital R is ড়.
y after a consonant makes the য-ফলা; two n’s make ন্ন.
Typed kothay and got কথায়
Meant কোথায়
Type kOthay: capital O gives the ো vowel sign. The suggestion chip offers it too.
Typed tomar and got তমার
Meant তোমার
Type tOmar: capital O gives ো. The suggestion chip offers it too.
Typed sikkha and got সিক্ষা
Meant শিক্ষা
Type shikkha: the word is spelled with শ, so use sh. The suggestion chip offers it too.
Typed bangali and got বাংআলি
Meant বাঙালি
Type baa~Naali: the ঙ is ~N, not ng; ng is the ং of বাংলা.

Each pair was run through the engine when this page was built. The keystrokes shown are exact; casual spellings (shorter, without the double vowels) usually reach the same word through the chips.
05 · FAQ
It follows the same conventions for the main letters (a, o, O, ng, R, Rh, t`), written from scratch for this site. Some Avro key combinations are not reproduced. The chart above lists what this tool accepts.
Bijoy (SutonnyMJ) is a legacy font keyboard that stores Bengali as English-looking characters. This page types real Unicode Bengali. Use the Bijoy converters to move old Bijoy text to or from Unicode.
Roman Bengali is ambiguous (s or sh, o or O). The first chip is the word-list match when there is one; the others are single-edit alternatives, so press its number or tap it.
Click in the box and type each word the way it sounds, for example “amar sOnar bangla”. When you press space or a punctuation key the word becomes Bengali (আমার সোনার বাংলা). The chips above the box list other spellings; press 1–5 or tap one to swap it in.
Right after a word converts, press Backspace once to get your English letters back and edit them, or press Ctrl+Z, or tap “Undo word”. You can also tap another chip before pressing space. Switch with Ctrl+Space when you want plain English.
No. The conversion runs in your browser. The page downloads one small word-list file from this site so it can suggest spellings; what you type is never sent. The text is kept in this tab’s session storage so a refresh does not lose it, and it disappears when you close the tab.
It is built for touch screens: big tappable chips, and the conversion waits until your keyboard has finished its own word so predictive keyboards do not fight it. If your phone keyboard autocorrects Roman words before this page sees them, turn off auto-correct for this site or use the suggestion chips.
Yes: Copy puts the Bengali text on the clipboard, and the download buttons save a .txt or a Word .docx. The text is standard Unicode, so it pastes into WhatsApp, Gmail, Word and Google Docs.
