01 · How Malayalam typing works
Malayalam has its own letters that no other Indian script needs: the pure-consonant chillus (ൻ ർ ൽ ൾ ൺ), ഴ (zh) and റ (rr). This page writes a chillu when a word ends in n, r, l, L or N, and gives ഴ and റ their own keys.
A final n, r, l, L or N becomes the chillu ൻ ർ ൽ ൾ ൺ, and a final m in a longer word becomes ം.
zh gives ഴ (മഴ, പഴം) and rr gives റ. nj is ഞ and ng is ങ.
Lower-case e and o are short; capital E and O are long, as on the Telugu and Kannada pages.
Type a doubled consonant and the halant is written for you, as in അമ്മ and വെള്ളം.
Press space, Enter or a punctuation mark and the word you typed turns into Malayalam. Pasted text is converted word by word.
Roman letters can be read several ways. The chips list known words first, then single-letter alternatives. Press 1–5 or tap.
Toggle plain English for names, URLs and numbers. Backspace right after a conversion gives your letters back.
02 · Spelling ambiguity
Malayalam has the sounds ഴ ള ല and ഡ ട ദ ത that Roman letters easily merge, plus the short and long e and o. Every pair below was run through the typing engine when the page was built, and a test checks each one.
zh is ഴ, capital L is ള and plain l is ല.
aa is the long ാ.
Capital T is ട and plain t is ത.
Capital E is the long േ.
Typed malayalam and got മലയലം
Meant മലയാളം
Type malayaaLam: the long ാ and ള are both needed.
Typed sneham and got സ്നെഹം
Meant സ്നേഹം
Type snEham: capital E is the long േ. The suggestion chip offers it too.
Typed kutti and got കുത്തി

Each pair was run through the engine when this page was built. The keystrokes shown are exact; casual spellings (shorter, without the double vowels) usually reach the same word through the chips.
05 · FAQ
Yes. The chillus are the Unicode 5.1 atomic characters ൻ ർ ൽ ൾ ൺ, not a consonant plus ZWJ, so they behave in modern fonts and apps.
Use the ML-TT converters linked below to move legacy Malayalam text to Unicode.
The list is built from subtitle word counts (about 7,800 words). Malayalam’s many forms mean it only knows common ones; unfamiliar words use the rules.
Click in the box and type each word the way it sounds, for example “malayaaLam bhaaSha”. When you press space or a punctuation key the word becomes Malayalam (മലയാളം ഭാഷ). The chips above the box list other spellings; press 1–5 or tap one to swap it in.
Right after a word converts, press Backspace once to get your English letters back and edit them, or press Ctrl+Z, or tap “Undo word”. You can also tap another chip before pressing space. Switch with Ctrl+Space when you want plain English.
No. The conversion runs in your browser. The page downloads one small word-list file from this site so it can suggest spellings; what you type is never sent. The text is kept in this tab’s session storage so a refresh does not lose it, and it disappears when you close the tab.
It is built for touch screens: big tappable chips, and the conversion waits until your keyboard has finished its own word so predictive keyboards do not fight it. If your phone keyboard autocorrects Roman words before this page sees them, turn off auto-correct for this site or use the suggestion chips.
Yes: Copy puts the Malayalam text on the clipboard, and the download buttons save a .txt or a Word .docx. The text is standard Unicode, so it pastes into WhatsApp, Gmail, Word and Google Docs.
