Voice typing: speak in Tamil, get text
Choose a language, press the button and talk. Your words appear as Unicode text you can copy or download. Read the short privacy note first: this tool works differently from the rest of the site.
Your voice is not processed on your device.
When you press the button, your browser records from the microphone and sends the audio to its speech service, which is run by the browser’s vendor (in Chrome, Google), to get the words back. We never receive the audio or the text, but the vendor does. Don’t dictate anything private.
01 · Privacy, plainly
Unlike our converters, this tool is not on-device.
Every other tool here runs in your browser and sends nothing anywhere. Speech recognition is different: turning speech into text takes large models that browsers run on their vendor’s servers. So when you dictate, your audio leaves your device.
- 01
Your browser
Records from the microphone, only while you have pressed Start listening.
- 02
The browser’s speech service
Receives the audio and returns text. In Chrome this is Google. Other browsers use their own vendor’s service. Their privacy policy applies, not ours.
- 03
This website
Receives nothing: no audio and no text. The text you dictate is kept only in your tab’s session storage so a refresh does not lose it.
If that is not acceptable for what you are writing, use the Tamil99 keyboard or phonetic typing, which never leave your device. See also our privacy page.
02 · How to use it
Four steps.
- 01
Pick your language
Choose the language you will speak. The browser needs this in advance because it does not detect it.
- 02
Press “Start listening”
Your browser asks to use the microphone. This happens only after you press the button.
- 03
Speak, then check
Words appear grey while the browser is still deciding, then settle into the box. You can edit the text like any other.
- 04
Copy or download
Copy the Unicode text, or download a Word file. The text works in WhatsApp, Gmail and Word.
03 · Languages
Eleven languages offered.
These are the language codes this page asks your browser to use. Whether each one works depends on the browser vendor’s speech service. If one is not supported, the page tells you.

Questions about voice typing
Is my voice uploaded?
Yes, by your browser. Speech recognition in Chrome sends the audio to Google’s servers, and other browsers use their vendor’s service in a similar way. This website never receives the audio or the text, but the vendor does. Do not use voice typing for anything private or confidential; use the Tamil99 keyboard or phonetic typing instead, which stay on your device.
Why does it need an internet connection?
Because the recognition is done by the browser vendor’s servers, not on your device. Offline, the browser reports a network error.
Which browsers work?
Chrome and Edge on computers and Android phones, and recent Safari. Firefox does not offer speech recognition, and a page cannot add it. On an unsupported browser this page tells you so instead of showing a broken button.
Why is my language missing or giving an error?
Which languages work is decided by the browser vendor’s speech service. If yours reports that a language is not supported, try another language, another browser, or your phone’s own voice keyboard (Gboard’s microphone key supports many Indian languages).
Why does it stop listening after a pause?
Browsers end a session after a few seconds of silence even in continuous mode. This page quietly restarts it while “Keep listening” is on and you have not pressed Stop. If the browser stops it for good, press the button again.
Does it write punctuation?
Not reliably, and spoken punctuation commands may not work in your language. Check the text and add punctuation by hand.
