02 · How to

How to convert TeraFont Trilochan to Unicode (3 steps)

Legacy text only looks like Gujarati on a computer that has TeraFont Trilochan installed. Everywhere else (phones, WhatsApp, websites, search results) it appears as English letters like “U]HZFT”. Converting to Unicode fixes that for good.

  1. Paste your TeraFont Trilochan text

Check that “From” says TeraFont Trilochan, then paste your text. TeraFont Trilochan text such as “U]HZFT” looks like a jumble of English letters and symbols until it is converted.

  2. Check the Unicode Gujarati

The Unicode Gujarati appears as you paste: “ગુજરાત”. The converter found 6 things to check in this TeraFont Trilochan sample and lists them under “notes”. Select a note to highlight it in your input.
Output box showing the TeraFont Trilochan sample converted to Unicode Gujarati: “ગુજરાત”, with the list of 6 notes open
  3. Copy it or save a Word file

Copy puts “ગુજરાત” on your clipboard, ready for WhatsApp, Gmail or Google Docs. The Word button saves a .docx already set in Shruti, so you don’t need TeraFont Trilochan to read it.

03 · Output font

Set the output font in MS Word or Google Docs

Unicode text is real Gujarati, so any Gujarati-capable font will display it. Pick one that looks good for your document.

Microsoft Word

  1. 1Paste the converted text, then press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on Mac) to select everything.
  2. 2On the Home tab, click the font box, type “Shruti” and press Enter.
  3. 3Optional: Review → Language → Set Proofing Language → Gujarati, so spell-check does not underline everything.
  4. 4If the text still shows boxes, install a Unicode font that covers the script, such as Noto Sans Gujarati.

Google Docs

  1. 1Paste the converted text and select it with Ctrl+A.
  2. 2Open the font menu → More fonts, search for “Noto Sans Gujarati” (or Noto Serif Gujarati) and add it.
  3. 3Apply the font. Because the text is Unicode, it also copies cleanly into Gmail, Sheets and Slides.

05 · Known limits

What to watch for.

  • Short-i precedes the cluster; reph follows it. Half forms and dedicated conjuncts need reconstruction.
  • Latin letters and punctuation overlap Gujarati slots. Z represents either ર or ૨, and 5 either પ or ૫; the decoder chooses consonants and reports ambiguity.
  • Unverified half forms and terminal virama are preserved with diagnostics. Other TeraFont families and LMG Arun are not supported.

Checked against Ankit Pipalia’s terafont-trilochan-converter, the open-source converter this mapping was taken from: 506 of 720 test conversions matched exactly. Of the 214 differences, 185 were errors in that converter, 6 were equivalent spellings and 23 remain open. Because the mapping comes from that project, this checks how faithfully it was carried over, not whether the original table is right. See the accuracy page for every difference.

Only the Trilochan mapping is verified. Check the original font name before converting.

Each of the other 191 was reviewed, and 185 turned out to be errors in that converter; 23 are still open. No independent converter has confirmed the table itself yet. The sample on this page converts exactly as expected. No fluent-speaker review has been done, so read important text before you print or submit it.
