01 · What changes

Why changing the font isn’t enough.

Both fonts store Hindi as English keystrokes, and most keys agree. These 12 don’t. If you only switch the font in Word, every one of them turns into a different letter. This table is generated from the converter itself.

02 · Who needs this

When Kruti Dev text meets a Chanakya layout.

  • 01

    Office text going to print

Matter typed in government and business offices is very often Kruti Dev 010, while many newspaper and magazine DTP layouts are set in Walkman Chanakya. Pasting Kruti Dev keystrokes into a Chanakya text box produces wrong letters wherever the two layouts differ.

  • 02

Press copy coming back to the office

The reverse also happens: text from a DTP file set in Chanakya needs to be edited by staff who only have, or only type in, Kruti Dev.

  • 03

    Old files with mixed fonts

Archives often contain both fonts. Converting everything to one of them (or better, to Unicode) makes the files consistent and searchable.

03 · Using it in Word

Getting the result into your document.

  1. Convert and download

Paste the Kruti Dev text above, then use “Download Word (.docx)”. The file is already set in Walkman Chanakya 905.

  2. Or copy and paste

Copy the output, paste it into your document, select it and set the font to Walkman Chanakya 905.

  3. Install the font first

Walkman Chanakya 905 must be installed on the computer that opens the file. Without it, the text shows as English letters.

  4. Check the flagged characters

If the loss report shows anything, fix those few spots by hand in the final layout.

04 · FAQ

Questions about Kruti Dev and Chanakya

Can I just change the font from Kruti Dev to Chanakya in Word?

Only for the letters that sit on the same keys in both fonts. The rest come out as different letters, because each font stores Devanagari as its own set of English keystrokes. Converting rewrites the keystrokes so the text reads the same in the new font.

How does this converter work?

It decodes the source font into Unicode Devanagari, then encodes that Unicode into the target font’s keystrokes. Anything the target font cannot show is flagged in the loss report instead of being dropped silently.

Which version of Chanakya is this?

Walkman Chanakya 905, the version most DTP files use. Other numbered Chanakya fonts may place some characters differently, so check a short sample first.

Should I convert to Unicode instead?

If the text will be emailed, put on a website, searched or read on a phone, yes. Unicode works everywhere without a special font. Use font-to-font conversion only when a print layout or template specifically needs the legacy font.
