01 · About the font

DevLys 010, in plain words.

A Hindi legacy font that sits right next to Kruti Dev in offices and exam halls, and looks almost the same until one wrong letter gives it away.

DevLys 010 is another Devanagari ASCII font from the DTP era. Like Kruti Dev, it is typed on a Remington-style Hindi layout and stores Devanagari as English letters, so a DevLys document looks like gibberish (“fgUnh”) on any device without the font.

It is easy to mistake DevLys for Kruti Dev: the common letters and many keys line up. But several conjuncts, punctuation marks and special glyphs sit on different keys, which is why swapping the font name on a document often leaves a handful of wrong characters instead of fixing it.

A few glyph mappings were corrected after an entry-by-entry check against IIT Delhi’s InDesignFontConverters and KrutiExtract, two open-source converters. That check covered selected glyphs only, not the whole IIT table.

Who still uses it

  • 01

    Government and legal typing

DevLys 010 turns up alongside Kruti Dev in departmental typing and court work, depending on which software the office standardised on.

  • 02

    Typing-test candidates

Some notifications name DevLys 010 or Kruti Dev 010 as the permitted font. The permitted font and layout are set by each exam, so check yours.

  • 03

    Print and DTP

Older print layouts that were built in DevLys still need DevLys text when they are edited.

02 · For print, DTP and typing

Get Unicode Hindi into DevLys 010 for print and exams

Some printers, layout programs and typing-test environments still need text in DevLys 010. This converter writes the exact keystrokes the font expects and lists any characters the font cannot show, so nothing is lost without you knowing.

  1. Paste your Unicode text

Type or paste Hindi text in Mangal, Google Docs, a website or WhatsApp. Real Unicode characters, not already-converted text.

  2. Read the loss report

Characters DevLys 010 has no glyph for are highlighted. Replace them in the source before you send the file to print or submit it.

  3. Copy the result

The output looks like English letters (“Hkkjr”). That is correct: the font turns them back into Hindi shapes.

  4. Set the font to DevLys 010

Paste into Word, PageMaker, CorelDRAW or your exam software and apply the DevLys 010 font. If the font is not installed, the text keeps showing as English letters.

Have a whole document instead of a paragraph? The Word file converter keeps tables, bold text and layout.

03 · Output font

Set the output font to DevLys 010 in MS Word

The converted text is DevLys 010 keystrokes, so it only looks like Hindi when the DevLys 010 font is applied. It has to be installed on the computer that opens the file.

Microsoft Word

  1. 1Install DevLys 010 if you haven’t already (on Windows, right-click the font file → Install for all users; on Mac, use Font Book), then restart Word.
  2. 2Paste the converted text. Use Paste Special → Unformatted Text (Ctrl+Alt+V) so no formatting from the source comes along.
  3. 3Select the text and type “DevLys 010” into the font box on the Home tab.
  4. 4Before sending the file to someone else, either embed fonts (File → Options → Save → Embed fonts) or export to PDF.

Google Docs

  1. 1Google Docs offers its own font list only, so DevLys 010 cannot be selected there.
  2. 2Use Word or LibreOffice for the final file, then share a PDF if others need to read it.
  3. 3If the text must live in Google Docs, keep it as Unicode and convert only the final copy.

Pasting DevLys 010 text into Google Docs shows English letters instead of Hindi.

05 · Known limits

What to watch for.

  • The core keyboard is shared with Kruti Dev, but extended characters and preferred forms differ (for example ä, ç, ¨ and ©). Use the converter that matches the actual font name in the document.
  • The short-i matra and the reph are positioned visually, exactly as in Kruti Dev, and are reordered during conversion.
  • A document that mixes both fonts must be converted section by section, or through the Word file converter which reads the font of each run.

Compared with HinLegacy on 720 conversions, 658 matched exactly. All 62 differences were equivalent spellings. Round trip: we converted 50,757 Devanagari test strings (word-list words, sentences, and every consonant, vowel sign, conjunct, reph and nukta combination) to DevLys 010 and back. 50,753 came back exactly; the other 4 contain a character DevLys 010 has no glyph for, which the converter flags. See the accuracy page for every difference.

06 · FAQ

Questions about Unicode to DevLys

When should I convert Unicode to DevLys?

When a print shop, an office template or a typing-test environment explicitly asks for DevLys 010. If it just says “Hindi in a legacy font”, ask which one, because Kruti Dev and DevLys are not interchangeable.

Will the result display correctly without DevLys installed?

No. The output is plain English letters that only look like Hindi when the DevLys font is applied. Install the font on the machine that will open the file.

How do I convert Mangal text to DevLys 010?

Mangal text is Unicode, so paste it here. Then set the output font to DevLys 010 in Word or your DTP app, otherwise it shows as English letters.

Is my Hindi text uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, and nothing you paste is sent anywhere.

Can I turn DevLys 010 text back into Unicode later?

Yes. Paste it into the DevLys to Unicode converter, or press the swap button above. Characters the loss report flagged were kept as Unicode, so they come back unchanged.

How accurate is the DevLys 010 converter?

In our tests it agreed exactly with HinLegacy on 658 of 720 conversions. Each of the other 62 was reviewed. The sample on this page converts exactly as expected. No fluent-speaker review has been done, so read important text before you print or submit it.
