Dashed keys depend on position. Faded keys are not mapped by this font. Hold Shift on your keyboard to see the upper layer.

01 · How the layout works

How the ML-TT Karthika layout works.

ML-TT Karthika stores Malayalam as English letters. The vowel signs േ and െ are typed before the consonant and reordered by the converter, and many conjuncts have dedicated keys. A large part of the font lives outside the plain keys, so a tray of the extended characters is included.

Type the keys, get the word

Most letters are one key. For example, ML-TT Karthika spells മലയാളം with the keys shown here.

    aebmfwമലയാളം

  2. 02

◌േ is typed before the letter

Some vowel signs are typed first and the letter after, the way they look on paper. Keys like t, s, { work this way here. The converter puts them after the letter in Unicode.

    tIകേ

  3. 03

84 characters are off the keyboard

The font also uses characters outside the plain keys: conjunct glyphs and extra signs, typed with Alt codes or a keyboard driver in the real font. Open “more characters” under the keys to add them.

03 · Practice

Common words, and their keystrokes.

Type the keys in the box above and check you get the word. Each pair was generated and checked by the converter when this page was built. “Try” puts the keystrokes in the box.

Some keystrokes include characters that are not on the keyboard (they look like symbols or accented letters). In the real font these come from Alt codes or a keyboard driver; “Try” inserts them for you, and the “more characters” tray lists them all.

04 · FAQ

Questions about the ML-TT Karthika keyboard

Is ML-TT Karthika the same as Revathi or Ambili?

They share many keys, but the fonts are separate profiles with their own extended characters. Use the converter for the font actually used in your document.

Do I need the ML-TT Karthika font installed?

No. This page turns your keystrokes into Unicode Malayalam as you type, which displays everywhere without any special font. You only need ML-TT Karthika installed if you copy the raw keystrokes (“Copy keys”) into a document set in ML-TT Karthika.

Can I use this on a phone?

Yes. Tap the on-screen keys. Each key shows the Malayalam letter it types, and dashed keys depend on position.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. The last text you typed is kept only in this tab’s session storage so a refresh doesn’t lose it.
