Keystrokes for common exam words.
Typewriter order puts ि before the letter. The Unicode-order column is what the Keyman keyboard expects. Both give the same text. Generated from the layout code.

Four things GAIL typists do.
Half letter, then k
Letters like ख, भ, थ and ध have no full-letter key. Type the half form and then k: [k is ख, Hk is भ.
Reph goes first
Shift+Z types र् before the letter it sits on. Zd is र्क, and in कार्य it comes just before य: dkZ;. Rakar z comes after, as in iz for प्र.
One key for common conjuncts
Shift+9 is त्र, Shift+8 is द्ध, Shift+` is द्य, Shift+] is द्व, J is श्र and K is ज्ञ. Learn these first.
Matras that combine
After ा, s makes ो and S makes ौ. After अ, k makes आ, then s makes ओ. vks is ओ.

Questions about this page
Does the SSC use Remington GAIL?
The SSC CHSL 2023 Tier II typing instructions list “Hindi Remington GAIL” among the layouts a Hindi typist may select, with “Hindi Inscript”, “Hindi Krutidev” and “Hindi Remington CBI”. A 2018 Allahabad High Court notice also lists Remington (GAIL). Read the current notification for your exam.
What about Remington CBI?
Remington CBI is a related but separate layout and is not implemented here. If your exam names CBI, this test will not match it key for key.
Why can I turn the ि setting off?
Typewriter users strike ि before the letter, which is the default here. The Keyman keyboard this layout is ported from types ि after the letter. Pick the one your exam software uses; the Unicode result is identical.
Some keys do not do what my exam software does.
We ported the default and Shift layers. Extra conjuncts and ङ, ञ live on the Right-Alt layer of the source keyboard and are not available, and exam IMEs may place a few signs differently. Passages here avoid characters that need the Alt layer.
