How to convert FML Malayalam to Unicode (3 steps)

Legacy text only looks like Malayalam on a computer that has FML Malayalam installed. Everywhere else (phones, WhatsApp, websites, search results) it appears as English letters like “C¶s¯”. Converting to Unicode fixes that for good.

Microsoft Word

What to watch for.

  • Pre-base e, ee and ai and split o, oo and au signs require syllable reordering.
  • Chillus use atomic Unicode letters. The shared Iv slot cannot distinguish chillu-k from ka with virama; encoding that distinction produces a loss warning.
  • Historical dot reph is unsupported and flagged. Check the original before publishing.
  • This profile does not establish compatibility with every ML-TT Karthika, Revathi or Ambili variant.
