01 · How the layout works

How the Chanakya layout works.

Walkman Chanakya is a legacy Devanagari font family from Hindi newspaper and magazine production. Its keys are close to the Kruti Dev arrangement for most letters, but a number of keys (and the extended characters) give different results, so a Kruti Dev converter or keyboard is the wrong tool for Chanakya text. This page targets Walkman Chanakya 905; other numbered releases may differ in places.

  1. 01

Type the keys, get the word

Most letters are one key. For example, Chanakya spells भारत with the keys shown here.

    Hkkjrभारत

  2. 02

◌ि is typed before the letter

Some vowel signs are typed first and the letter after, the way they look on paper. The converter puts them after the letter in Unicode.

    fdकि

  3. 03

Reph (र्) is typed after the letter

Type the letter, then Z; the converter moves the reph in front of the letter in Unicode.

    dZर्क

  4. 04

    Shift gives half letters

Many shifted keys give the half form used in conjuncts. E on its own is म्, so Ed makes a conjunct.

    Edम्क

  5. 05

49 characters are off the keyboard

The font also uses characters outside the plain keys: conjunct glyphs and extra signs, typed with Alt codes or a keyboard driver in the real font. Open “more characters” under the keys to add them.

05 · FAQ

Questions about the Chanakya keyboard

Can I use the Kruti Dev keyboard for Chanakya?

Not safely. The two layouts agree on many letters but not all, so a word can look right and be wrong. Use the table above to see the keys that differ, and convert whole documents with the Chanakya converter.

Does this work for every Chanakya release?

This page uses the Walkman Chanakya 905 mapping. Other numbered releases of the Chanakya fonts may place some characters differently.

Do I need the Chanakya font installed?

No. This page turns your keystrokes into Unicode Hindi as you type, which displays everywhere without any special font. You only need Chanakya installed if you copy the raw keystrokes (“Copy keys”) into a document set in Chanakya.

Can I use this on a phone?

Yes. Tap the on-screen keys. Each key shows the Hindi letter it types, and dashed keys depend on position.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. The last text you typed is kept only in this tab’s session storage so a refresh doesn’t lose it.
