Dashed keys depend on position. Faded keys are not mapped by this font. Hold Shift on your keyboard to see the upper layer.
01 · How the layout works
How the Shivaji layout works.
Shivaji is a legacy Devanagari font that stores Marathi as ordinary English letters (for example “marazI” for मराठी) and draws the real letters with the font. Its key arrangement is not the Hindi typewriter layout used by Kruti Dev: most letters sit on different keys, and the vowel sign ि and the reph are placed visually. The on-screen keyboard below shows what each key types.
- 01
Type the keys, get the word
Most letters are one key. For example, Shivaji spells महाराष्ट्र with the keys shown here.
maharaYT/महाराष्ट्र
- 02
◌ि is typed before the letter
Some vowel signs are typed first and the letter after, the way they look on paper. The converter puts them after the letter in Unicode.
ikकि
- 03
Reph (र्) is typed after the letter
Type the letter, then -; the converter moves the reph in front of the letter in Unicode.
k-र्क
- 04
Shift gives half letters
Many shifted keys give the half form used in conjuncts. @ on its own is क्, so @k makes a conjunct.
@kक्क
- 05
48 characters are off the keyboard
The font also uses characters outside the plain keys: conjunct glyphs and extra signs, typed with Alt codes or a keyboard driver in the real font. Open “more characters” under the keys to add them.

04 · FAQ
Questions about the Shivaji keyboard
Is Shivaji the same layout as Kruti Dev?
No. Shivaji uses different keys for most letters, so Kruti Dev practice does not carry over. Check the key chart on this page, or type in Unicode with the Marathi InScript keyboard and convert to Shivaji.
Do I need the Shivaji font installed?
No. This page turns your keystrokes into Unicode Marathi as you type, which displays everywhere without any special font. You only need Shivaji installed if you copy the raw keystrokes (“Copy keys”) into a document set in Shivaji.
Can I use this on a phone?
Yes. Tap the on-screen keys. Each key shows the Marathi letter it types, and dashed keys depend on position.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. The last text you typed is kept only in this tab’s session storage so a refresh doesn’t lose it.
