01 · Why InScript
One standard layout for Marathi, and every other Indian script.
Marathi is typed on the same Devanagari InScript layout as Hindi, so one set of key positions covers both. What differs is the vocabulary: Marathi leans on ळ and on long conjuncts such as ष्ट्र, and uses ऑ and ॉ in English loanwords.
Some government typing tests accept InScript with a Unicode font such as Mangal; the SSC CHSL 2023 Tier II instructions, for example, listed an InScript option for Hindi. Which layouts and fonts are allowed changes between exams and years, so check your exam’s official notice before you rely on any layout.

Questions about Marathi InScript
Is there a separate Marathi InScript layout?
Marathi is typed on the Devanagari InScript layout, the same one used for Hindi. The Marathi-specific letters (ळ, ऑ) are on it. This page and the Hindi InScript page share the layout and differ in practice words and notes.
How do I type ॲ, used in some Marathi words?
ॲ (U+0972) is not on this layout. Paste it from a character table; the nearby ऍ (Shift+1) is a different letter.
How do I type Marathi in Shree-Dev or Shivaji fonts instead?
Those are legacy fonts with a different layout. Use the Shivaji or Shree-Dev keyboard pages, or type here and convert to the legacy font with the Unicode to Shivaji or Shree-Dev converter.
What is InScript?
InScript (“Indian Script”) is the standard keyboard layout for Indian scripts, defined by C-DAC and standardised by the Bureau of Indian Standards. Every script uses the same logical arrangement: vowels and vowel signs on the left, consonants on the right, and the halant key for conjuncts.
How do I add InScript to my own computer?
On Windows, open Settings, then Time & language, then Language & region. Add the language and choose its InScript (or standard) keyboard from the keyboard list, then switch with Win+Space. Linux desktops include InScript variants in the keyboard settings too. This page needs nothing installed.
Can I use this on a phone?
Yes. Tap the on-screen keys; they work in the same layout. On touch devices the phone’s own keyboard is hidden so it does not interfere, and there is a link to bring it back.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Typing, copying and the Word download all happen in your browser. The text you typed is kept only in this tab’s session storage so a refresh does not lose it.
