What this chart is based on.
The layout is the published standard InScript chart (the Indian-government layout developed by C-DAC), the one Windows ships as “Devanagari - INSCRIPT”. We wrote the key table ourselves from the published layout; no keyboard source code was copied. If a key differs from what your exam software shows, trust the exam software and tell us.

Questions about this page
What is “Mangal InScript”?
InScript is the keyboard layout; Mangal is the font Windows uses to display Unicode Devanagari. “Mangal InScript” in exam software means typing Unicode Hindi with the InScript layout, shown in Mangal. This test shows the passage in Noto Sans Devanagari, which has the same letters; the keys and the Unicode text are identical.
Why does a conjunct take three keys?
InScript never reorders or combines. A conjunct is the first consonant, the halant key (d), then the second consonant: स्त is m d l. Shift+7 and a few other Shift keys give ready-made क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ and श्र.
Do I need to install an InScript keyboard?
No. The test reads key positions, so your computer can be set to English (US). To type InScript in other programs, add the InScript keyboard in your operating system’s language settings.
Which InScript is this?
The standard Indian-government InScript layout (the one in Windows as “Devanagari - INSCRIPT”), written down as a key chart. The Dravidian short-vowel keys and Vedic signs are not included. An InScript engine is being built for the rest of the site, and this test will switch to it when it is available.
Do the number keys type Devanagari digits?
Yes, as in Windows InScript: the unshifted number keys give १ २ ३ …, and Shift gives symbols. The passages here avoid digits so every layout can type them.
